A rich and moist chocolate cake paired with dreamy vanilla buttercream, perfect for celebrations or cozy evenings.

Ingredients

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons heavy cream or milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the boiling water until well combined.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Beat the softened butter until creamy for the vanilla buttercream.
  9. Add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until smooth.
  10. Add heavy cream or milk until desired consistency is reached.
  11. Frost the cooled cakes with buttercream.
  12. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For a richer chocolate flavor, consider adding 1 cup of brewed coffee in place of some boiling water. Top with quality cocoa powder for the best results.
