A nostalgic dessert that combines rich chocolate filling with a crisp pie crust, topped with whipped cream or meringue.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pre-made pie crust
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 3/4 cups milk
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream or meringue for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt until fully combined.
  3. Add the milk gradually while whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and bubbles, about 10 minutes.
  5. Whisk the egg yolks in a separate bowl until blended.
  6. Temper the egg yolks by slowly adding a small amount of the hot chocolate mixture while whisking.
  7. Combine the tempered egg yolks back into the saucepan and cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring until thickened.
  8. Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  9. Pour the chocolate filling into the pre-baked pie crust.
  10. Cool at room temperature and then chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Serve with vanilla ice cream or fresh berries for added flavor.
