A comforting baked French toast casserole made with challah or brioche, soaked in a rich custard and baked until golden and fluffy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, cut into cubes (about 10 to 12 cups)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (any type, like whole, almond, or oat)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (or a non-dairy substitute)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Fresh fruits, maple syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the Bread: Begin by cutting your challah or brioche loaf into cubes. Aim for pieces that are about 1-inch in size.
  2. Whisk the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Combine the Bread and Custard: Add the bread cubes to the custard mixture and stir gently. Let it sit for about 10–15 minutes.
  4. Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking dish.
  5. Pour into the Baking Dish: Transfer the mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  6. Bake to Golden Perfection: Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Rest Before Serving: Let it rest for about 5-10 minutes before slicing.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Slice into portions and serve warm with fresh fruits, maple syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.

Notes

For a richer flavor, let the casserole sit in the refrigerator overnight. You can use stale bread for better absorption.
