Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup finely diced yellow onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound ground beef (85/15)
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • ½ cup finely diced yellow onion
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • â…› teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9×13 inch baking dish by spraying it with non-stick spray.
  2. Boil the whole head of cabbage in a large pot for 4-5 minutes until the leaves are pliable.
  3. In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Cook 1 cup of diced onion until soft, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Stir in the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, ½ cup diced onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, parsley, paprika, and cayenne (if using).
  6. Cut the tough rib from each cabbage leaf to make them easy to roll. Place 3-4 tablespoons of the filling on the lower end of the leaf and roll it up tightly.
  7. Pour a layer of the tomato sauce into the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 60-75 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  9. Let the cabbage rolls rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

These cabbage rolls can be made ahead and frozen before baking. Use a mix of beef and pork for a different flavor.
