Experience the nostalgia of carnival evenings with these soft, chewy homemade pretzels topped with coarse salt.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 to 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast on top. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Form the dough: Add 4 cups of flour and salt to the yeast mixture, mixing until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, adding more flour if sticky.
  3. Let it rise: Shape the dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubles in size.
  4. Preheat the oven: As the dough rises, preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  5. Prepare the boiling solution: In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
  6. Shape the pretzels: Divide the dough into equal pieces and roll each into a rope, shaping it into your desired pretzel form.
  7. Boil the pretzels: Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds.
  8. Season with salt: Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top of each pretzel.
  9. Bake to golden perfection: Bake for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Serve warm with mustard or a cheesy dip.

Notes

Knead the dough well for a chewy texture. Water should be warm but not hot to activate the yeast. Experiment with shapes and toppings for variety.
